What is the prospect’s strategy and ambitions?

Strategy

• Plant Expansion
Pecan Deluxe has invested in a new bakery area to reduce lead times further and improve customer service, which is fully operational from the start of 2023. The new bakery unit effectively doubles the companies’ production capacity and customers will reap the benefits of reduced production times.

In addition, as part of a continuing project to improve output for fudge and caramels, Pecan Deluxe has achieved a significant increase in production yields by adjusting the manufacturing process. As part of the investment, they installed a cold extrusion line to meet the increasing demand for cookie dough, particularly in the ice cream sector. They also added a second one-shot chocolate line, allowing them to produce a greater variety of different-coloured chocolates and filled cups, as both real chocolate and low-melt chocolate for ice cream are growing markets.

• Operational Investment
Investment in the right technologies effectively allowed the company to service growth markets. In 2018, they embarked on a series of operational improvements as part of a £3m investment, effectively joining up individual manufacturing units to create a secure site under one roof.

• Back-end Production Automation
Pecan Deluxe looks forward to automating some of the back-end of their production, but it’s about investing when cash-flow allows.

• Product Offerings Development
The company brings new products to the market by investing in continuous research and careful product concept planning. In 2021, for instance, Pecan Deluxe Candy Company launched Popping Boba.

• Allergen-sensitive production
Pecan Deluxe has a separate manufacturing unit allowing the company to keep allergen-sensitive production areas sealed off, putting the company in a very strong position in regard to allergen segregation.

• New plant-based product formulations
Pecan Deluxe made the decision. To reformulate a large proportion of its best-selling products traditionally made with animal-derived ingredients like eggs and diary so that they can offer customers an equivalent plant-based version that does not require an Export Health Certificate (EHC) and vet inspection and the associated paperwork and cost that this entails. Brownie, cake, cookie, and cookie dough pieces are now available without the ‘composite food’ classification, which can bring additional hassle for European customers purchasing from UK suppliers.

• Make the buying process as smooth as possible for all involved.
The company worked hard to offer DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) as a buying option because it’s the easiest route for customers who want to take delivery
of products without any involvement with customs, Duty/VAT etc.

The ability to sell with DDP means smoother logistics, customs clearance and inspections and reduced supply chain costs, which all assist with keeping prices down.

• The company expanded their warehousing and moved their cold store capabilities in-house.

• The company assigned the whole shipping process to Calais, using the company as the single point of entry to the EU, enabling vet inspection and clearance to be streamlined at one place. The assignment results in a much faster, more efficient shipping process.

After entry, the goods are free to circulate within the EU without any requirement to deal with customs officials at multiple border points and the consequent delays that would normally result from this. The haulier can drive directly to the customer without the need to divert to discharge a T1 Transit document.

All the above-mentioned strategic decisions aim to create economies of scale by minimising production times, ameliorating customers’ experience, minimising transport and production costs, limiting bureaucracy, and accelerating the delivery process.
